View the locations & schedule from June 18, 2017 through August 25, 2017, while school (and school lunch) is out.
The Children’s Summer Lunch Program provides a free sack lunch to low-income children on summer weekdays. Last summer we provided 17,554 lunches at 23 sites throughout the county. Children 18 and younger may participate in the program by going to a designated lunch site during the meal service. No pre-registration for lunch is required. A complete site list and schedule for summer 2017 sites, with addresses, dates and times of meal service can be found at this link.
56% of all Humboldt County school children qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program during the school year, but what do these young people eat when school is out? The Children’s Summer Lunch Program represents the nutritional link between the end of one school year and the beginning of another. Food for People partners with local parks and recreation programs, community centers and volunteers to provide healthy sack lunches at locations around the county.
Lunches are prepared daily by intergenerational volunteers at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center and then delivered by Food for People staff and community volunteers to all of the lunch sites. Humboldt Transit Authority kindly transports coolers full of lunches each summer weekday on Southbound buses and UPS generously transports Eastbound to Willow Creek and Hoopa. Collectively, staff and volunteers drive over 500 miles each day delivering meals to the distribution sites.
