More about Children's Summer Lunch

The Children’s Summer Lunch Program provides a free sack lunch to low-income children on summer weekdays. During summer of 2015 we provided nearly 15,000 lunches at 21 sites throughout the county. Children 18 and younger may participate in the program by going to a designated lunch site during the meal service. No pre-registration for lunch is required.

53.3% of all Humboldt County school children qualify for the free or reduced price lunch program during the school year, but what do these young people eat when school is out? The Children’s Summer Lunch Program represents the nutritional link between the end of one school year and the beginning of another. Food for People partners with local parks and recreation programs, community centers and volunteers to provide healthy sack lunches at locations around the county.

Lunches are prepared daily by intergenerational volunteers at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center and then delivered by Food for People staff and community volunteers to all of the lunch sites.  Humboldt Transit Authority transports lunches each summer weekday on Southbound buses to Fortuna, Loleta, Rio Dell and Scotia and UPS transports lunches Eastbound to Willow Creek and Hoopa.  Collectively, staff and volunteers drive over 500 miles each day delivering meals to the distribution sites.
