Microwave Cooking Basics for Pantry Staples

All times may vary by microwave strength. Use large microwave-safe bowls to prevent spills.

Mac & Cheese (Boxed)

∙ 1 box macaroni + 1½ cups water

∙ Microwave 8–10 min, stir halfway

∙ Add cheese packet + 2–3 Tbsp butter/oil + splash of milk or water

Beans (Canned)

∙ Drain beans

∙ Add 1–2 Tbsp water if dry

∙ Microwave 1–2 min

∙ Season to taste


 White Rice

∙ 1 cup white rice + 2 cups water

∙ Large microwave-safe bowl

∙ 10 min uncovered → 10 min covered → rest covered 5 min

Brown Rice

∙ 1 cup brown rice + 2 1/2 cups water

∙ Large microwave-safe bowl

∙ 12 min uncovered → 15 min covered → rest covered 5 min

∙ Brown rice takes longer to cook and requires more water due to its outer bran layer

Brown or Green Lentils

∙ 1 cup lentils + 3 cups water

∙ Microwave 15 min, stir

∙ Microwave 10–15 min more

∙ Season after cooking

Red Lentils

∙ 1 cup red lentils + 2½ cups water

∙ Microwave 5 min, stir

∙ Microwave 5–7 min more

∙ Soft texture—great for soups or creamy sides

Scrambled Eggs

∙ 2 eggs + splash of milk/water in a mug

∙ 30 sec, stir, 30–45 sec more

 

Hard-“Boiled” Eggs

∙ Crack egg into greased mug

∙ 30 sec, then 10–15 sec bursts until firm

 

Pasta

∙ 1 cup dry pasta + water (cover by 1 inch)

∙ 8–10 min, stir halfway

∙ Drain and season or toss with sauce.
